Welcome to the roaring 20s! An exuberant time in American history of social upheaval and rejection of traditional moral standards. This post World War I period was also known as the Jazz Age, indulged in new styles of dancing and dressing. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic 1925 novel The Great Gatsby perfectly captures the themes of decadence, idealism and social change of the time, also read as a cautionary tale of the pursuit of the American Dream.

The book is set in the fictional town of West Egg in Long Island focused on a mysterious young millionaire named Jay Gatsby and his obsession with the beautiful former debutante Daisy Buchanan. He hosts lavish parties in hopes of impressing Daisy and to win her over her husband, Tom. The story is narrated by Nick Carraway who observes the life of Gatsby, reflecting in the end how Gatsby’s desire for Daisy was corrupted by money and dishonesty. The American Dream of happiness and individualism is tarnished by the mere pursuit of wealth.

The novel was known for its elaborate descriptions and attention to detail, painting a vivid image of the 1920s era. The Great Gatsby has been adapted into many film versions, but the most recent directed by Baz Lurhmann in 2013 starring Leonardo Dicaprio. The film showcased extravagant costumes and settings, with dazzling flapper dresses and elegant headpieces. The flapper dresses were adorned in jewels and diamantes and were often accompanied by plush feather boas. Men usually just dressed in fancy tuxedos, which is not hard to replicate. These outfits display the decadence of the roaring 20s. The Great Gatsby costume is definitely a fun and sophisticated way to make a dashing appearance at a costume party, especially if you are a bit of a book nerd or you’re obsessed with the 1920s era.
