Why are pirates, pirates?

Because they ARRRR.

To be a pirate, you must have a criminal heart and be brave enough to tackle the elements of the seven seas. They rob other ships, stealing their cargo and other valuable items or properties. Piracy was first documented in the 14 century BC when a group of ocean raiders attacked the ships of the Aegean and Mediterranean civilians. You would think that pirates are a thing of the past, but they still exist today but just armed with automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenades. Unlike the big ships you typically see with the iconic skull flags hoisted, the pirates of today travel with small motorboats to attack and board ships. Bigger “mother ships” usually supply these small motorboats.

A famous pirate you may have heard of is the fearsome Blackbeard. Blackbeard and his crew of pirates terrorised sailors on the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea from 1716-1718. They ambushed ships carrying passengers and cargo when it was dark, luring the ship by hoisting a flag of the ship’s nationality to appear friendly. They only hoisted Blackbeard’s flag at the last moment. Merchant crews often surrendered as soon as they saw Blackbeard’s fight, but if they did not surrender, they move in and target the sailor. The aimless ship was then snared with hooks and the pirates leaped on board, holding all the passengers and crew hostage while they ransacked cabins looking for coins, gold silver and jewellery.

Most pirates are depicted with eyepatches, metal hand hooks and wooden legs because the most common weapon of the time was the cutlass. The most severe injury that could arise from this was a slash to the forehead and eye, hence the eye patch. Any wounds on the body can result in development of gangrene, so the rapid removal of the limb is essential for survival. The arteries would then be tied up and sealed with hot tar. If you have the stomach for it, be sure to dress up in a pirate costume or ladies pirate costumes.
